Diabetes

Most of us don’t give a second thought to our blood sugar levels. If you’re excessively thirsty or frequently urinating, you may be suffering from a serious condition called Diabetes. Here’s Dr. Firstname M. Lastname, an Internist with Medical Center/Hospital, to tell us more.

What is Diabetes?

Diabetes occurs either when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin or the body fails to respond to insulin properly. Insulin is a hormone that helps transfer blood sugar (glucose) from the blood to the body’s cells. A diabetic cannot turn the sugar and starches found in food into usable energy. The excess sugar remains in the blood and can lead to a multitude of problems.

So this is a serious disease?

Absolutely. Diabetes can cause chronic organ damage resulting in strokes, heart attacks, amputations, blindness, kidney failure, etc.

How do I know if I am diabetic?

The two main symptoms are excessive thirst and excessive urination. Other symptoms include a burning sensation in the feet and hands. Visual problems can also occur in both types of Diabetes.

There are two types of Diabetes?

Yes. Type 1 Diabetes usually occurs at an early age and requires either scheduled insulin injections or an insulin pump. Type 2 Diabetes is often harder to detect, and usually occurs later in life. Oral medicine and/or insulin may be used to treat Type 2 Diabetes. Diet and exercise are important in both disorders.

Should I be concerned?

I would strongly recommend everyone have their blood sugar checked regularly, as early diagnosis and treatment have been proven to prolong both quality of life and lifespan..
