2014 is the 30th anniversary of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. In the past three decades, tremendous progress has made in the awareness, detection and treatment of the disease.

Screening rates have increased

• The percentage of women getting mammograms has increased from 29 percent in 1987 to more than 67 percent.

More birthdays celebrated

• More than 200,000 breast cancer deaths have been averted since 1991.
• From 1990 to 2010, the death rate from breast cancer decreased 34 percent.
• In 1974, the five-year survival rate for breast cancer was around 75 percent. Today, the five-year survival rate for breast cancer is almost 90 percent. And the five-year survival rate for localized breast cancer is 98.5 percent!
