Women Are Becoming More Aware About the Dangers of Heart Disease

Here’s a quick quiz. True or False:

Heart disease is the leading cause of death for American women.

In 1997, only 30 percent of American women answered that question correctly—True.

Fortunately, thanks to ongoing education and greater awareness, 56 percent of women knew the right answer in a recent survey. But that still means that many women still don’t realize the real dangers of heart disease.

To enjoy a more heart-healthy life, women need to stop smoking, eat healthy foods, exercise regularly and limit their alcohol consumption. If you need some motivation, consider these statistics:

• Heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined.

• One in three women will die of heart disease.

• An estimated 43 million women in the United States have heart disease.

• Every minute a woman in the United States dies of a heart attack, stroke or some other form of cardiovascular disease.

• Since 1984, more women have died from cardiovascular disease than men.
