Protect Your Child From The Heat (4pg)
Soaring high temperatures of summer can cause a number of dangerous health issues, including dehydration, cramps, heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Children are especially susceptible to heat-related illnesses.
Make sure your children stay safe all summer long:
- Encourage your child to drink plenty of fluids Avoid caffeine, which can cause dehydration.
- Have your child wear loose-fitting clothing that is lightweight and light colored.
- Schedule regular rest periods and drink breaks in shady or cool areas.
- Check the heat index. A heat index of 100 or higher may be hazardous.
- Check your child’s urine. If it’s dark in color, your child may be dehydrated.
- Sunburn caused by excessive exposure to sunlight is the primary cause of skin cancer. Make sure it has a sun protection factor (SPF) of 30 or higher. Use about a palmful, even on overcast days. Be sure to reapply after swimming, toweling dry or sweating.
