Conquering Cancer (4pg)

Conquering Cancer

September is the month to raise awareness about two of the more preventable forms of cancer.

Prostate Cancer Awareness Week

September 20 – 26

The Facts: Prostate cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer in men. One in six men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer, and more than 35,000 die from the disease every year. In fact, a man is 33 percent more likely to have prostate cancer than a woman is to have breast cancer!

The Good News: Fortunately, prostate cancer is one of the most easily detected and easily cured forms of cancer. Men who are older than 50, African Americans older than 35 or anyone over 40 with a family member who has had prostate cancer should be tested every year. A simple annual screening saves thousands of lives every year.

National Ovarian Cancer Month

September 2009

The Facts: More than 25,000 cases of ovarian cancer will be diagnosed this year. The warning signs of ovarian cancer can be hard to detect.

Warning signs of ovarian cancer:

• A feeling of fullness, bloating and gas

• Frequent or urgent urination

• Nausea, indigestion, constipation or diarrhea

• Menstrual disorders or pain during constipation

• Fatigue and backaches

The Good News: If detected in its early stages, ovarian cancer has a very high survival rate of 93 percent! Talk to your personal physician about getting checked. An ultrasound and blood test are also available to check for ovarian cancer.
