Is Your Child Ready For School?
Here’s your medical checklist
Summer is winding down, and families are gearing up for the start of a new school year. Buying new notebooks and school clothes is part of this yearly ritual. But don’t forget that going back-to-school is also a good time to check on your child’s health. Here are five important questions to consider.
Does My Child Need To Have a Physical Exam?
Many school districts require a physical exam at certain grade levels. If your child wants to participate in sports, a sports physical and health history review are also often required.
Are My Child’s Vaccinations Up-To-Date?
Talk to your pediatrician or contact your local school district to find out exactly what vaccinations and booster shots are required.
Is My Child Seeing 20/20?
Good vision is a key to learning. In fact, as much as 80 percent of learning occurs visually.
A child with poor eyesight is going to struggle in school. Experts say that as many as 25 percent of kids between the ages of 5 and 17 have some sort of vision problem. Your child should have an eye exam at least every two years.
Does My Child Have A Chronic Health Condition?
If your child has asthma, allergies or other chronic health conditions, make sure the school knows so they can make any special arrangements. Schedule a meeting with your child’s teacher to discuss the situation.
Is My Child Eating Right and Getting Enough Sleep?
A healthy breakfast that includes protein, whole-grain bread and cereal will
boost a child’s energy and help them focus in school. Children 5 -12 years old
need at least 10 hours of sleep each night. Teenagers need about nine hours
of sleep.
